Rebuilding ‘RiskScapes’: post-flood Kerala 2018
October 9 @ 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm
Ravi Raman (State Planning Board, Kerala, India)
What could be the best political-ecological-ethical philosophy on which a devastated state like Kerala bases its efforts to transform its ‘RiskScape’? The paper engages with the complexities involved in rebuilding Kerala in the Indian south in the wake of the disastrous floods that ravaged the stat in June-August 2018. It will problematize the nature of the disaster and its consequences, the rescue, relief and rebuilding processes in the larger context of society-nature relations, including power relations. The paper would attempt to map the multiple scars – agrarian, environmental, human and so on – that the state has been left with taking into account the losses sustained, and their spatial and temporal relations within the larger context of treating Kerala as a ‘risk society’.
